I would consider myself to be pretty well-versed in skincare, but I am very reluctant to pay for expensive products. This is for two reasons:
1) I’m a broke af graduate working her first job, and
2) My youthful skin is doing okay, so I don’t feel the need to splurge on high-end skincare just yet.
So, when I saw an article raving about Thayers Alcohol-Free Witch Hazel Toner – an inexpensive but highly effective toner, my interest was piqued. At only £13 for a 355ml bottle (on Amazon UK), this was definitely within my price range.
This alcohol-free toner claims to reduce redness, acne, oily skin and more. “Surely one product can’t do all these things”, I thought. But after checking a couple more articles and the hundreds of positive reviews across the web, I had to try it for myself.
I set some ground rules – you know, for science:
- Use the toner twice a day, for a month
- All other aspects of my skincare routine will stay the same
- I will try (emphasis on ‘try’) to resist picking at any whiteheads or blackheads
I bought the rose-scented bottle as this was the most popular choice, but Thayers also offers different scents such as cucumber and lavender. Made with natural ingredients such as With Hazel extract, Aloe Vera and Vitamin E, this toner is great for sensitive skin.
The first application felt refreshing and cleansing; my face definitely felt rejuvenated, and I could feel the toner getting rid of excess oil without being too harsh. The rose scent was lovely and subtle.
As part of my skincare routine, I would apply this twice a day – morning and evening – after cleansing my face and before moisturiser.
My skin isn’t perfect, but at the end of the month-long trial, my skin did clear up – 80% of my blackheads and whiteheads have gone! My skin tone does seem to look smoother and more even, and my acne scars appear to have faded.
However, my oily face reigns supreme. This might be because I didn’t apply any toner during the day, but around midday my face will start to feel like an oil slick again. I have a little spray bottle and I will start spritzing some during the day to see if that helps.
Overall, I would definitely recommend this product to friends and family! It’s inexpensive, gets the job done, and a little bit goes a long way. I would even go so far as to claim that this is one of my holy grail products – I’ve never used a skincare product that shows visible results so quickly.
